Read an interesting article today about histrionic personality disorder.

Well, you may ask why my sudden interest in this kinda things.
well well,as it is life is filled with various kinds of personalities coming in and getting out and certain characters do leave an ever lasting impression you see..

Was just stating down the symptoms of one such character that used to be in my life and this term popped out.
And this being MY blog and I may write whatever I wanna write as long as I don't hurt another individual knowingly
I may share this in the name of creating awareness.

So here we go:
Histrionic Personality Disorder is characterized by a person who is always calling attention to them self and being overly dramatic.

Minor situations can cause wild swings in emotions.

They easily become bored with normal routines, and crave new, novel situations and excitement.

In relationships, they form bonds quickly, but the relationships are often shallow, with the person demanding increasing amounts of attention and in time to go they will wonder off leaving the person in dark.

Personality disorder characterized by at least 3 of the following:

1. self-dramatization, theatricality, exaggerated expression of emotions;
2. suggestibility, easily influenced by others or by circumstances;
3. shallow and labile affectivity;
4. continual seeking for excitement, appreciation by others, and activities in which the patient is the center of attention;
5. inappropriate seductiveness in appearance or behavior;
6. over-concern with physical attractiveness.

Associated features may include egocentricity, self-indulgence, continuous longing for appreciation, feelings that are easily hurt, and persistent manipulative behavior to achieve own needs.

They often project their own unrealistic, fantasized intentions onto people with whom they are involved.

They are emotionally shallow to avoid distress and have difficulty understanding themselves or others in any depth.

Selection of marital or sexual partners is often highly inappropriate.
The majority of the time their partners will have symptoms of personality disorders far worse than their own.

Women with borderline tendencies often form entirely negative convictions towards the male gender and treat them like pawns as a defense mechanism concealing their own inadequacies. Often seeking their attention and casting away when their craving is over.

They may require isolated retreats in order to obtain a comfortable level of understanding and acceptable functioning.

Although males often have chameleon-like social skills,similar to HPD females,
they tend to have trouble keeping lengthy friendships afloat as their paranoia may eventually lead to a near complete and permanent disposal of all interpersonal relationships at a given time effectively eliminating any emotional responsibility and accountability for their manipulative ways.

They tend to genuinely search for intimacy (many believe in "the one").(but trust me they are afraid just by the word 'commitment')

People with this disorder are usually able to function at a high level and can be successful socially and at work.

People with histrionic personality disorder usually have good social skills,
but they tend to use these skills to manipulate other people and become the center of attention.

Furthermore, histrionic personality disorder may affect a person's social or romantic relationships or their ability to cope with losses or failures.

People with this disorder may seek treatment for depression when romantic relationships end, although this is by no means a feature exclusive to this disorder.

They often fail to see their own personal situation realistically, instead tending to dramatize and exaggerate their difficulties.

Responsibility for failure or disappointment is usually blamed on others.

They may go through frequent job changes, as they become easily bored and have trouble dealing with frustration. Because they tend to crave novelty and excitement, they may place themselves in risky situations.

All of these factors may lead to greater risk of developing depression.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a widely used manual for diagnosing mental disorders, defines histrionic personality disorder as a pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

1. Is uncomfortable in situations in which he or she is not the center of attention

2. Interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior

3. Displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions

4. Consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self

5. Has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail

6. Shows self-dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion

7. Is suggestible, i.e., easily influenced by others or circumstances

8. Considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are


Simple to remember as:
* P - provocative (or seductive) behavior
* R - relationships, considered more intimate than they are
* A - attention, must be at center of
* I - influenced easily
* S - speech (style) - wants to impress, lacks detail
* E - emotional lability, shallowness

* M - make-up - physical appearance used to draw attention to self
* E - exaggerated emotions - theatrical


HMmm..Interesting ah..May sound like any vain pot out there..but..hiaz whats the point of talking about spilled milk eh? Anyway hope that served as a food for a thought session!
